Faber-Castell is one of the oldest industrial companies in the world. The company is the world’s leading manufacturer of wood-cased pencils with a varied range of products for writing, drawing and creative design, as well as decorative cosmetics. Faber-Castell is renowned for its high quality, innovative products, commitment to tradition, and environmental awareness.
Founded in 1761 at Stein near Nuremberg by cabinet maker Kaspar Faber (1730–84), the enterprise is family-owned since nine generations. Under Kaspar Faber's ambitious great-grandson Lothar (1817–96)., it expanded internationally and opened branches in New York (1849), London (1851), Paris (1855), Vienna (1872) and St. Petersburg (1874). It opened a factory in Geroldsgrün where slide rules were produced. Lothar von Faber was a pioneer in marketing and sales and a visionary entrepreneur. He set the standards for high-quality pencils, initiated the trademark law in Germany and was ennobled by the Bavarian king for his achievements in product innovations, social and economic commitment. In 1898, after the marriage of Lothar's granddaughter with a cadet of the Counts of Castell-Rüdenhausen, the family – and later also the company - took the name of Faber-Castell. In 1993, new corporate logo was introduced, combining the company name with “Since 1761” as a reference to its long heritage and an icon of the "jousting knights" – symbol of fairness, values and tradition.
Today, the company operates factories in 9 and sales units in 23 countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Australia and New Zealand. The Faber-Castell Group employs a staff of approximately 8,000 and does business in more than 100 countries.
